Chile is amazing!! It's been a week and so much has happened. First off is all the info for all my group members I love. Kate is my roommate (we just moved her stuff in my room today so we have one sleeping and one studying room--long story there) and she's from Rhode Island and beyond amazing. Adrian is hilarious and from Cali and never gets boring. Mitchell is from California and has lots of fun stories and I'm glad I'll be learning about the farm with him while interning. Maddy is the sweetest red hed I know from Oregon. Allison is great and from Montana and loves talking about Venezuela. Then I just met Brian the other day because he's been down here and seems very chill and hysterical. Looking to be a great trip!
There's been so much craziness with transportation it's chaotic but it all worked out and was fabulous. Lots of stories with hostals. Talca was grand, Consticion was great seeing where the tsunami hit bad-and I made good friends with 2 little girls. We're in Valdivia now and it's BEAUTIFUL!!! My house family is great but much different than the others and what I expected. They're all sweethearts though. Fernando is about 60-70 with his daughter Claudio husband. We've met so many family members it's intense but great. My spanish is on overload!!!! I learned 13 slang words just yesterday.
I've had a fabulous New Years Eve that lasted till 4 but not as crazy as Allison and Maddy's discoteca insanity. We had a bbq with out program director and met his daughter Ally (23) who is amazing and showed us around a bit aftwerwards. Then we hit the town. Always fun with the group. Food is entirely different! And the food has so much on it I feel like I'll gain 50 pounds in mayo, butter, and fat. It's different but good depending what you get. The drinks though, ARE TO DIE FOR!!! Cheap and amazing. Juice is fabulous and their alcohol is going to spoil us. We all think that our house families are out to get us drunk every time that we eat. There's the special Coke with sugar everywhere but water without gas and free bathrooms are near impossible to find when going out.
We've met most the families. We're all close. Scouted the University and it's beautiful. Lots of funny stories and adventures. Today was insane. Had an earthquake while in the third floor of the mall. We're ok. (I promise Mom we're ok). But the floor was moving like crazy and the TV's swaying like mad. Such a weird feeling and the panic from everyone scared us more than everything. Very cool experience but a bit scary. Still it was a mild earthquake they say.
My spanish is improving already but still needs work. I'm stoked for the adventures, living here, and being on the university. Tomorrow we go to our first day of school (we have a test within the first week blah) and then we're hitting up a music and beer festival in Niebla. Everything is fabulous and I'll update some pictures when I can. We get internet sometime later this week so right now I'm writing this quick with Kate at a cafe. Life is great and I'm embracing it while I can!! I hope all is great for everyone at home.
PS--somehow I've already attained three nicknames and Kate and I were dubbed the first to do something really stupid (only because we went into the mens bathroom and made an awesome friend in Santiago). And the first to be dubbed with Maddy's "boot." I plan on proving both these wrong. Much love to everyone!
